Nigeria’s Info Minister visits BBC, calls for deepened relations, balanced reporting

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has emphasized the importance of deepening mutual understanding between Nigeria and the BBC World Service to foster an informed society.

During a working visit to the BBC headquarters in London, Idris met with top management, led by Jonathan Munro, Deputy CEO of BBC News and Director of BBC World Service.

Idris highlighted the crucial role of the media in shaping narratives, fostering understanding, and driving development.

He encouraged the BBC to balance its reporting on Nigeria by showcasing the country’s progress and successes, emphasizing the need for positive content that inspires hope for a brighter future.

The Minister praised the BBC’s expansion in Nigeria, including the creation of language options in Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and Pidgin, which has facilitated information dissemination and employment opportunities for Nigerians.

Idris also addressed the challenges of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news, urging the BBC to strengthen mechanisms to combat these threats and ensure credible and responsible media ecosystems.

This visit is part of the Ministry’s efforts to build bridges and cooperation with foreign and local media houses, promoting a more informed society and balanced reporting.
