The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Ekiti State election, Ambassador Dare Bejide, has alleged widespread voter inducement and intimidation by some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ilawe-Ekiti.
Speaking with journalists on Saturday, Bejide expressed frustration over what he described as attempts to influence voters through the distribution of money and the deployment of thugs in parts of the community.
The ADC candidate specifically alleged that Senator Yemi Adaramodu and Hon. Olaoye Makinde, alongside other APC leaders in Ilawe-Ekiti, brought money to induce voters and mobilized thugs to intimidate his supporters and other eligible voters.
According to him, the alleged actions were capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process and denying voters the opportunity to freely exercise their democratic rights.
Bejide further alleged that his personal driver was assaulted during the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
“My driver was attacked and injured. He is presently undergoing treatment in the hospital. This is unfortunate and unacceptable in a democratic setting,” he said.
The ADC flag bearer called on security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the allegations and ensure that all political parties operate on a level playing field.
He urged electoral officials and security personnel to remain vigilant and prevent any acts capable of disrupting the peaceful conduct of the election.
Despite the alleged incidents, Bejide appealed to his supporters to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding, while continuing to participate in the electoral process.
As of the time of filing this report, the APC leaders mentioned in the allegations had not responded to the claims. Similarly, INEC and security agencies had yet to issue any official statement regarding the allegations.
