Rivers lawmakers announce impeachment proceedings against Gov Fubara

The political crisis rocking Rivers State intensified on Thursday as the State House of Assembly formally commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, barely eight days into the new year.

The move, widely seen as an escalation of the prolonged power tussle between the governor and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, followed the presentation of an impeachment petition signed by 26 lawmakers.

The petition, which was laid before the House by the Majority Leader during plenary, accused Governor Fubara and his deputy of gross misconduct.

Though the specific allegations were not immediately detailed on the floor, the action marked the most decisive step yet by the lawmakers in the festering political standoff.

The Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule, who presided over the session, confirmed receipt of the petition and announced that it would be transmitted to Governor Fubara within seven days, in line with constitutional provisions guiding impeachment proceedings.

Political observers believe the lawmakers’ action is being driven by loyalists of the former governor, Nyesom Wike, whose rift with his successor has polarised the political landscape of the oil-rich state and disrupted governance.

The latest development further heightens tension in Rivers State, as residents and stakeholders await the governor’s response and the next steps from the legislature in what is shaping up to be a major constitutional and political showdown.
