The Federal Government has postponed the special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting earlier scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the postponement was necessitated by the state funeral of the late leader, which is set to take place on the same day in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

In addition to the postponement, the federal government has declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday to honour the memory of the former President, who died on Sunday in a London clinic following a prolonged illness.

The statement confirmed that Buhari’s remains will arrive from London by noon on Tuesday and will be buried later that day according to Islamic rites in his hometown.

President Bola Tinubu has directed a national mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast for seven days across the country.

In a show of respect and solidarity, President Tinubu also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to travel to London to condole with the Buhari family and accompany the late President’s body back to Nigeria.

Tinubu had earlier called for the special FEC session to honour his predecessor’s “significant contributions to our country”, the statement added.

A new date for the rescheduled FEC session will be announced by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation after the funeral rites.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as civilian President from 2015 to 2023, was aged 82.
