The Federal Government has lifted the ban on mining exploration activities in Zamfara State, following significant improvements in the security situation.
Announcing the decision during a weekend briefing, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, highlighted Zamfara’s vast mineral wealth, including gold, lithium, and copper, as a key driver of economic potential. He noted that the previous ban, imposed in 2019 due to security concerns, created a vacuum exploited by illegal miners.
Dr. Alake commended recent security efforts under the Tinubu administration, which neutralized major bandit commanders and reduced insecurity. With the ban lifted, the government will focus on better regulation, intelligence gathering, and ensuring that mining activities contribute to national revenue.
The minister also addressed concerns surrounding Nigeria’s MOU with France, emphasizing that it is solely focused on capacity building for mining professionals and does not compromise national control of resources or involve any military pact.
Dr. Alake called on the media to continue educating the public about government policies and reforms in the mining sector, noting their vital role in preventing misinformation. He also revealed plans for 2025, including further reforms and initiatives to attract investments and achieve sustainable growth in the mining industry.
