The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has inaugurated a fact-finding team to investigate the dispute between Osun State Government and Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL).
The committee’s formation was announced last week, following the sealing off of the gold mining company due to alleged tax evasion and other infractions.
Dr. Alake reaffirmed the federal government’s stance that mining falls under the exclusive legislative list, rendering states powerless to unilaterally disrupt mining operations nationwide.
He said: “Though mining companies must obey laws and regulations, sub-national authorities lack the power to shut down operations arbitrarily.”
The Minister highlighted the federal government’s understanding of the mining environment’s unique needs and the necessity of collaborating with sub-nationals.
Alake disclosed that states can apply for mining licenses and participate through the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO).
Terms of Reference of the committee:
– Identify root causes of the Osun-SROL disagreement
– Review contractual obligations and agreements
