President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to reshuffle his cabinet, a move seen as a response to growing criticism over the government’s performance.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the plans on Wednesday while briefing State House Correspondents, citing the President’s desire to redefine the wellbeing of Nigerians.
However, Onanuga did not provide a specific timeline for the reshuffle.
The proposed cabinet shake-up comes amid mounting pressure on Tinubu to address the country’s economic woes, including hyperinflation, food insecurity, and the crisis in the oil and gas industry.
The Nigerian Monitor reports that many Nigerians have expressed frustration with the government’s handling of these issues, with some calling for drastic changes.
Key Areas for Reform:
– Economic Revitalisation: Addressing the country’s economic challenges, including hyperinflation and food insecurity.
– Oil and Gas Sector Reform: Tackling the crisis in the oil and gas industry, including oil theft and refining capacity.
– Security: Strengthening national security to combat terrorism and banditry.
Some analysts suggest that Tinubu should start by replacing himself as Minister of Petroleum, given the sector’s critical role in the country’s economy. Others have called for the removal of non-performing ministers and aides.
In addition to the cabinet reshuffle, the TETFUND Act is set to be amended to allow for the transfer of 30% of its financial allocation to the Education Loan Fund, aimed at sustaining the agency.
The planned reshuffle is expected to take place before October 1, according to sources at the presidency.
As Nigerians await the changes, many hope that the new cabinet will bring fresh ideas and momentum to address the country’s pressing challenges.
