The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sought the media’s assistance in mobilizing stakeholders and voters for the November 16, 2024, Ondo State governorship election.
Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola made the appeal during a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Akure, emphasising the critical role media professionals play in the electoral process.
Babalola reassured of INEC’s commitment to a free and fair election, citing the high turnout during voter registration as evidence of the electorate’s enthusiasm.
Key assurances include:
1. Prompt polling unit openings
2. Timely delivery of election materials to 3,993 polling units
3. Collaboration with security agencies to minimize violence
4. Deployment of BVAS and IREV for transparency and efficiency.
Ondo State NUJ Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, in a remark, pledged media support for INEC, expressing the willingness of his colleagues and media organisations to sustain their support for INEC and other stakeholders to deliver free, fair and peaceful governorship election in Ondo state.
Adegbite encouraged INEC to ensure free flow of information before, during and after the November 16 election, while the commission should ensure credible media Accreditation and Training for the polls.
With this visit which signals mutual cooperation, INEC and the media aim to deliver a peaceful and credible governorship election in Ondo State.
