The Inspector-General of Police, (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, had announced the successful rescue of 27 abducted persons in Benue State.
The IGP, at a press briefing held in Abuja, disclosed that the victims included 20 medical students from the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, who were kidnapped on August 15, 2024, while traveling to a conference in Enugu.
He informed the press that the rescue operation, carried out by the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with other security agencies and community partners, resulted in the neutralisation of the kingpin of the notorious gang and the arrest of two other members.
The police boss noted that the operation was conducted without the payment of any ransom.
IGP Egbetokun commended the bravery and professionalism of the police officers involved in the operation and acknowledged the support of the Office of the National Security Adviser, other security agencies, and local vigilantes.
He assured Nigerians that the police remain committed to ridding the nation of criminal elements and protecting the lives and property of all citizens.
The rescued victims include:
– 20 medical students (16 males and 4 females) from the University of Jos Teaching Hospital
– 5 other passengers
– 2 additional victims who had fallen prey to the same criminal gang
The IGP urged Nigerians to cooperate with the police and other security agencies in the fight against crime and assured that the police will continue to work tirelessly to ensure a safer Nigeria.
