Ondo State Police Command has issued a statement to address the misinformation surrounding the arrest of protesters in Akure on Saturday.
According to the statement signed by SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, it was stated that a group called “Take it back” had requested permission to stage a peaceful protest on August 10, 2024, which was approved by the Commissioner of Police to hold at the Arcade Ground, Igbatoro Road.
The command explained that however, on the day of the protest, the group deviated from the approved location and gathered at the NEPA Roundabout, and frantic efforts were made to ensure they move to the approved location.
It was stated that the protesters became unruly after their number swelled along the road, and resisted police efforts to escort them to the designated area.
The situation was said to have escalated, and the police arrested some individuals who were suspected of being infiltrators with malicious intentions.
The Command emphasized that the arrest was not politically motivated but rather a move to maintain law and order and prevent violence.
The PPRO disclosed in the statement that investigations revealed that some of the arrested individuals had ties to cultism and cybercrime activities.
The Police reassured the public that they are committed to upholding the rule of law, maintaining professionalism, and respecting human rights.
They urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
“The arrested individuals are being profiled, and will be arraigned upon completion of the investigation”, the statement added.
