The Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) has called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately stop the issuance of Central Motor Registry Information System (CMRIS) certificates by the Nigeria Police Force.
The association alleges that the police are illegally demanding payments of at least ₦6,000 from vehicle owners for the certificates, without any legal backing.
In a letter to the Inspector General, NBA-SPIDEL questions the police’s authority to issue such certificates, stating that it is not provided for in any laws.
The association demands that the police stop issuing the certificates, shut down registration websites and centers, and refund collected monies to Nigerians within three days.
Failure to comply within seven days may lead to legal action, the association warns.
NBA-SPIDEL emphasizes that the police’s duty is to protect citizens and enforce laws, not collect monies or issue certificates.
The association urges the police to respect the law and stop exploiting unsuspecting Nigerians.
