Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has emphasized the importance of free and fair elections in honouring the memory of late Chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, and other democratic heroes.
The Governor believes that credible elections are the lifeline of a vibrant democracy and that politicians must respect the will of the people.
Adeleke who spoke during the Democracy Day celebration on Wednesday, called on leaders to recommit to democratic ideals, strengthen the electoral system, and accept electoral verdicts as a mark of respect for voters.
He emphasized that power comes from the people and that rigging elections is an act of war against democracy.
The Governor shared his personal experience of accepting defeat in 2018 and encouraged politicians to do the same, citing Abraham Lincoln’s example of perseverance in the face of electoral defeats.
Adeleke’s message emphasizes the importance of upholding democratic tenets and ensuring that the will of the people is not subverted.
