Three die in Akungba road accident

Not less than three people were feared dead on Friday in an accident at Akungba Akoko, in Akoko Southwest local government area of Ondo state.

The victims, including two siblings identified as Joshua Ogbeye, Eniola Ogbeye, and the motorcycle rider, Idowu Omitogun, were confirmed dead by the police.

It was gathered that the trio who were on a motorcycle, rammed into a parked vehicle when the driver suddenly opened the door while attempting to alight from the car.

They were said to have fallen on the road after ramming into the vehicle door opened without precaution, and an oncoming vehicle crushed the three passengers and the Okada rider to death.

An eye witness account revealed that the two passengers and the Okada rider died on the spot, while the driver of the vehicle ran away.

According to him: “the driver of the car suddenly opened the door and hit the motorcycle which carried the victims and they fell down on the road, while the other vehicle coming on the other side ran over them”

The eye witness said irate youths of the town set the vehicle ablaze, while the identity of the driver of the vehicle remained unknown.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Funni Odunlami who confirmed the incident described it as unfortunate and condemned the burning of the vehicle.

Odunlami also explained that the incident was caused by the driver of the burnt vehicle, saying his identity is still unknown.

She however, could not confirm if the driver of the Toyota Camry with Registration Number LND 592 GX is a student of the Adekunle Ajasin University or a resident of the town.

She said the remains of the three victims had been deposited at the morgue.

The Ondo Sector Commander of the Road Safety Commission, Mr Ezekiel Son’Allah, who also confirmed the accident, said that it was caused by wrongful overtaking and route violation on the part of the vehicles involved.

Son’Allah said: “Three persons were killed while the accident was caused by wrongful overtaking and route violation. The victims were taken to Aduloju Hospital Akungba by the policemen.”

While cautioning motorists to avoid violating traffic rules, the FRSC boss opined that speed breakers should be mounted on the road to forestall recurrent crashes on the road.
